Swedish black metal legends Dark Funeral are back with their newest offering We Are The Apocalypse. The band, established in 1993, is pushing closer to the 30th anniversary of spreading the Devil’s music around the globe.

With We Are The Apocalypse, the album unfolds like a tale or journey, where the final outcome is the apocalypse that opens the gates to Hell. As with the first singles/videos leading up to the album release “Let The Devil In”, “Nightfall” and “Leviathan”, the album continues on with the remaining dark trajectory that will captivate and haunt listeners while collecting their souls in servitude for Satan himself.

The drumming time signatures were technically impressive and at times completely relentless. In one track there will be intense, heavy blasts in one section, then a slowing hypnotic tempo to stress the importance of the arrangement or lyrics. On the next note, the convulsing tempos return filling out the track and definitely pushing Jalomaah to rise above and deliver nothing less than his blood, sweat and last ounce of his soul into this album. Rounding out the underlying and ever-present rhythm section, Adra Melek landed some deep, dark and heavy basslines that flowed like the sacrificial blood of the lamb offered in the final and title track of the album.

Lord Ahriman and Chaq Mol delivered the rampage of guitar assaults throughout the entire listening experience. There is no doubt that fans have come to expect heavy riffage soaked in brutality and technical ability when it comes to anything from Dark Funeral and they absolutely nailed it. The darkness delivered on this album will leave even the most hypercritical listeners little room to complain.

When it comes to the lyrics and vocals, Heljarmadr has a great mix of low frequencies that give way to the death growls that give the signature haunting, whisper-like throat singing style that fans have grown to expect from Dark Funeral. It’s beast-like, almost indiscernible while evoking chaos, death, and misery (or delight, you be the judge).

Lyrically, there’s much to be had in this album that will leave listeners contemplating life, death and all that surrounds just being. There’s rage, evil, destruction and acceptance of what’s to come. There are moments of morbid whispers that feel like echos of death and lyrics to match, “I’ll be a whisper in the night, I’ll walk beside you till we unite in the dark.”

Legions of followers will have something to behold in We Are The Apocalypse and will definitely be looking for live gigs to experience another diabolical ritual with Dark Funeral.
