The Butcher Babies are back today with their newest release ‘Lilith’ and it’s packed full of killer track after track. If you haven’t realized it on their past releases yet, Butcher Babies are ready to rage and rip faces off!

I remember clearly the first time I ever heard of the Butcher Babies. It was Mayhem Fest 2013.  Before that day I’d never heard of this band before. As I stood in front of their stage as they came out one by one I remember thinking to myself with much displaced disdain, “great, this is going to be yet another miserable attempt at a chick fronted metal band.”  Boy was I glad I stood there long enough to watch the insanity unfold.  Within the first song I was quickly converted into a Butcher Babies fan! This band was whole, a complete metal band fronted by some hardcore vocalists who at time’s kind of scared the hell out of me with their primal screaming!  What a refreshing moment in metal for me!  As a chick myself who’s tired of gimmicks in metal, this is how metal music should be. So many have come before them and failed to impress and miserably failed, not just slightly, but epically.  I knew then and there, this was a band to keep an eye on!

For all you music fans out there who still doubt metal music can be legit and have amazing singers who happen to be female, you only need to listen to this band to be convinced that gender in metal doesn’t matter anymore! Seriously, don’t be mistaken and think it’s token hot chicks fronting a band just because they look amazing…. this is just hardcore metal!  Chicks or not, they are authentic metal musicians who just give zero F**ks about gender in music and blaze through all the bullshit while kicking ass. Let’s make that point very clear. It’s all about the music with Butcher Babies!

From the beginning track to the last, vocalists Heidi Shepherd and Carla Harvey are ready with the full verbal assault with screaming and clean vocals. As ‘Lilith’ began to play with , I knew this was the album I’ve been waiting for!  It’s not just ok, its full insanity.  From the soft, vulnerable clean vocals to the terrifying primal screams, there’s so much to love about this album.

My favorite tracks on this album are “Burn the Straw Man”, “Headspin”, “#iwokeuplikethis”, and “POMONA (Shit Happens)”.

“Burn the Straw Man” is the first track on the album and comes at the listener in a full fury.  Intense guitar riffs and pounding percussion kick the song off followed with deranged vocals that lash out into insane primal screams.  The entire track is fast tempo and had me banging my head almost instantly all while making me want to scream along!

“Headspin” is the 3rd track on  ‘Lilith’ and starts out with a slow haunting guitar lead in then joined with softer, clean vocals that pick up tempo and come with full intensity while staying in clean style.  After the first chorus the vocals go into a whisper then get joined with screams.  All through out this track I enjoyed a heavy bass line that at times sounded a bit distorted while it pounded throughout the song.  I appreciate the switch up in the vocal styles in this song, it’s a chance to sing along without burning the vocal chords up trying to hit their screams.

The fifth track on ‘Lilith’ is “#iwokeuplikethis”.  I particularly enjoyed this song for its intensity from beginning to end. This is the song that I expect to see a wall of death open up on during their live shows!  If this song can’t get the audience going, they have to be dead. This is one of the most full metal assault tracks on the entire album and is one that will terrify you with the level of primal screaming going on. Oh the madness!

My other favorite track is of course “POMONA (Shit Happens)”. If you take objection to the chronic use of the word fuck, this is not your song! With an impressive count of 52 fucks littered throughout this 3:13 timed track, Butcher Babies have out shined so many other bands who’ve held the record of the use of the word fuck in previous songs.  For someone like me who tends to use fuck as an interchangeable part of the most innocent of verbal exchanges like an endearing hello fucker as a greeting or fuck off as a simple goodbye, even I am impressed! But there’s much more to this song than just the impressive use of fuck.  The music is manic tempo and wild.  It’s another pit stirring track that is full of precision timed drums and wild guitar riffs and packed full of intense vocals and death, primal screams and even soft clean vocals.  Toward the end the tempo drops and you get some really cool slow grinding guitar riffs as they drag the last part of the song in a final chorus then end the song. This one completely pleased all of my musical senses!

The entire album is packed full of great new music.  The band did a killer job writing this album.  The studio performance is done with absolute precision and the mixing…. perfection!  This is one hell of an album.

If you are looking for something new that’s going to make you want to rage, get up on your feet or just something that makes you bang your head, this is it!  BUY ‘LILITH’ TODAY!  This is a great album all the way through.
